ABDUL RASHID COMMITTED TO PRIORITISING GOOD GOVERNANCE FOR MSN'S PROGRESS
KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 (Bernama) — National Sports Council (MSN) director-general, Abdul Rashid Yaakub, is firmly committed to driving the organisation forward by prioritising good governance for future progress.
Abdul Rashid, aged 60, who will helm MSN until next April, emphasised that the council is poised to proactively review existing Acts for necessary amendments to align with present needs and suitability.
He also highlighted adjustments to standard operating procedures aimed at streamlining the allocation of funds to National Sports Associations for development programmes, prioritising initiatives such as podiums, national reserves, and others.
"The MSN Act dates back to 1971, nearly 50 years ago. So, we need to amend it to ensure that the allocations are more current because some of them may be outdated.
"For example, we've been involved with para-athletes since 2007-2008, which is relatively new. So, we need to reassess to encompass all stakeholders on this matter," he explained.
Abdul Rashid was speaking to reporters after the sports community Iftar at MSN Bukit Jalil last night, which was also attended by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh, and her deputy, Adam Adli Abd Halim.
He acknowledged that his re-appointment was aimed at ensuring smooth operations, especially with two major upcoming events this year, namely the 2024 Paris Olympics and the Paralympics.
"We've been laying the groundwork; however, the final stages of preparation are crucial. While significant strides have been taken, some aspects may not have fully realised their potential, yet we are steadily progressing towards that goal.
"Our primary focus is to ensure our athletes and coaches are optimally prepared to compete at the pinnacle of global competition. We aspire to deliver outstanding performances, and if luck favours us, insya-Allah we may even clinch that coveted gold medal," he emphasised.
Abdul Rashid assumed leadership of MSN on Nov 1, 2023 and officially retired on April 1 this year. However, he has been offered a new contract from April 4 to April 3 next year.
