ASTAF ends five-year suspension of Negri Takraw Association president

KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 (Bernama) -- The Asian Sepaktakraw Federation (ASTAF) has agreed to lift and end the five-year suspension of Negeri Sembilan Sepaktakraw Association president Wan Mohd Husni Abdullah effective tomorrow.

ASTAF president Datuk Abdul Halim Kader said the release which comes into effect at 7.15pm was decided because Wan Mohd Husni is seen as a talented young man with great potential for the development of sepaktakraw in Malaysia.

He said the ASTAF executive council had received a letter of appeal from the secretary-general of the Sepaktakraw Association of Malaysia (PSM) Datuk Abidullah Salleh on behalf of Wan Mohd Husni to lift the suspension that he would otherwise be serving until Dec 8, 2024.

“We have met to consider the appeal in appreciation of the assurance given by Abidullah. We have weighed the words spoken by Wan Mohd Husni preceding his sentence to a five-year suspension from Dec 9, 2019 to Dec 8, 2024 because he was over-exuberant as with young ‘hot heads’ without having in-depth experience in leading the national sepaktakraw team,” he said in a statement today.

Abdul Halim said that in the (2019) incident, Wan Mohd Husni was for the first time given a great deal of trust and responsibility (in his appointment) as manager of the Malaysian women's sepaktakraw squad for the 2019 Manila SEA Games.

He said ASTAF hoped that Wan Mohd Husni would take heed of the black spot that befell him in sepaktakraw as a good lesson to change towards a more positive way of thinking and conduct, for the sake of his future, as a sports leader in Malaysia.

ASTAF suspended Wan Mohd Husni for five years from Dec 9, 2019 to Dec 8, 2024 from engaging in any sports-related activities for disciplinary offences at the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines.

However, after submission of an appeal, the suspension was lifted on Aug 26, 2021 with certain conditions, but on June 23 last year, the (full) suspension was re-imposed on Wan Mohd Husni.
